German Songs

  Bunt sind schon die Waelder
Schneefloeckchen Weissroeckchen
Winter ade
Nun will der Lenz uns gruessen
ABC (Das Alphabet Lied)
Haenschen klein
Bruder Jakob
Kein schoener Land in dieser Zeit
Die Gedanken sind frei
Die Affen rasen durch den Wald
Von den blauen Bergen kommen wir
Weil heute Dein Geburtstag ist
Wenn ich ein Voeglein waer
Sah ein Knab ein Roeslein stehen
Geh aus mein Herz
Oh Du lieber Augustin
Bruederchen komm tanz mit mir
Wenn alle Bruennlein fliessen
Nehmt Abschied Brueder
Mondnacht
Guten Abend, gute Nacht
Der Mond ist aufgegangen
Sternenhimmel Schlaflied

Bruder Jakob (Frere Jacques, Brother John)

Liedersammlung

German nursery rhymes and folk songs

After the big success of the Nursery Rhyme Collection in England producer and arranger Ian Watts and his German co-arranger Mike Wilbury decided to launch a similar project with traditional German Songs. Most tunes came up centuries ago but some tracks are actually brand new, exclusively written for this collection.

Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques,
dormez vous? Dormez vous?
Sonnez les matines, sonnez les matines,
Ding, ding, dong, ding, ding, dong.

Bruder Jakob, Bruder Jakob,
schläfst du noch? Schläfst du noch?
Hörst du nicht die Glocken?
Hörst du nicht die Glocken?
Ding dang dong, ding dang dong.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Brother John, Brother John?
Morning bells are ringing,
morning bells are ringing.
Ding, ding, dong, ding, ding, dong.

I hear thunder, I hear thunder,
Hark don't you? Hark don't you?
Pit-a-patter raindrops,
pit-a-patter raindrops,
I'm wet through, so are you.

Bruder Jakob, Bruder Jakob,
schläfst du noch? Schläfst du noch?
Hörst du nicht die Glocken?

Ding dang dong, ding dang dong.

Background notes

This is one of the few folk songs that are similarly famous in different countries. The origin of this tune is french of course but the English version (Are You Sleeping) and the German version (Bruder Jakob) are quite as popular as the French original. This version plays around with a mix of the French, English and German versions.
